The Rondo Theatre Company is the performing arm of the Rondo Trust. We usually present three productions each year, two in The Rondo Theatre and one highly enjoyable event outdoors in Royal Victoria Park, Bath.
The Company dates back to 1953 when the Everyman Theatre Club met at the Octagon in Bath. The name was changed to The Octagon Theatre Club. In 1982 the Club began performing in the Rondo Theatre. Its first production was Hedda Gabbler. Several successful productions followed including A Chorus of Disapproval.
Following the creation of The Rondo Trust, and the first stage of the development of the theatre, the Company formalised its relationship with The Trust, and changed its name to The Rondo Theatre Company, and became the resident amateur group.
Over the years there have been a great many wonderful productions at the theatre. Twelfth Night, The Tempest and our recent production of the rarely performed King John came from the Shakespeare canon. The Insect Play, Man of the Moment and The Woman who Cooked her Husband by Debbie Issett, Hysteria and Insignificance by Terry Johnson, Brimstone & Treacle by Dennis Potter, and Grimm Tales, Look Back in Anger, and The Accrington Pals, represent some of the variety of productions we have staged.
Over the last three years the Company has produced an annual outdoor production of “Shakespeare in the Park”. “Much Ado About Nothing” was followed by “Twelfth Night” and “a Midsummer Night's Dream”. Entry is free and a collection taken for charity. Over the first three years of this event we were able to donate over £3,000 to Macmillan Cancer relief. Above all a good time was had by all! In 2004, in a joint production with Bath Drama, we produced “Chaucer in the Park”, comprising a specially commissioned dramatised selection from The Canterbury Tales.
The company's most recent production was “Closer” by Patrick Marber, performed in November 2004 to very good reviews.
We are planning a return to “Shakespeare in the Park”, outdoors in Royal Victoria Park in the last week of June 2005.
